Jēkabs Jančevskis (1992) paved his way into music and acquainted himself with the field of composition (with composer Ilze Arne) at the former Children Music School No 1 in Riga, graduating the piano class with lecturer Zane Mežgaile. Afterwards Jēkabs enrolled in Riga Dome Choir School and its choir conducting department (lecturer Inita Kamarūte), graduating year 2012. While in the conducting class, Jēkabs did not neglect composition, deepening his knowledge with composer Pauls Dambis for some time and composer Ēriks Ešenvalds (up till 2012). Presently, Jēkabs is studying composition at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music with prof. Selga Mence.
From 2009 till 2012 Jēkabs conducted the St. John’s Church choir. Presently is the conductor of choir Sōla and choir Anima.
In 2004 and 2009 Jēkabs took part in the International Competition of Young Pianists in Valmiera, gaining the second prize both years. In 2010 the young composer participated in composition competition Latviskais Skaņas Kods submitting his piece "Lietuvēns", which was awarded the first prize, as well as the musicians and audition prize. In 2011 Jēkabs gained the third prize at the Aloja Competition for New Choir Songs Kas mēs bijām, būsim, esam. Throughout 2012 Jēkabs was engaged with the students of the Riga Dome Choir School, arranging and performing songs of the German rock band Rammstein in several concerts, including Rammstein concert in Latvia (Arena “Rīga”) with the song "Ohne Dich".
Jēkabs has been active in the cinema and theatre field as well, cooperating with director, producer Ivars Zviedris on several occasions and shaping the musical background of several TV broadcasts. In 2010 Jēkabs wrote music for Dubļi (Mud), a film directed by Dainis Kļava, the premier of which took place in the Cēsis Castle Ruins.
Jēkabs was also the composer for theatre play Lauva Ziemā (Lion in Winter) (director – Juris Jonelis), which experienced its premier in summer 2012.
The compositions of J. Jančevskis have been performed by St. John’s Church Choir, mixed choir of the Riga Dome Choir School, as well as choirs Austrums, Sōla, Kamēr... and State choir Latvija.
Jēkabs' professional achievements include first prize and audience prize at the P. Vasks Foundation Vocal chamber music premier music competition in 2013.
In 2013, Jēkabs' "Adveniat Regnum" was announced the best free choice piece for the Battle of Songs at the Song Festival.
