Songs for Children's Choirs (10/04/2014)
In honour of the Latvian poet Auseklis, native to their region, and continuing the a capella choral singing tradition, in 2005 the Aloja town council announced a children's original choral composition competition for children's choirs, with the aim of motivating young composers to create Latvian modern songs for their peers. Choir conductor Māra Skride, who first came up with the idea for the competition, is also the project manager; the name of the competition comes from a line of Auseklis' poetry- Kas mēs bijām, būsim, esam. [What we were, will be, are.]
Young composers from all over Latvia have since 2005 submitted 146 a capella original compositions and Latvian folk song arrangements. The jury have judged 50 of the composers to be competition laureates.
